Asst. Manager, Product Development

BioPhase Solutions specializes in recruiting top talented professionals for Southern California's Scientific community. We are currently looking for an Assistant Manager, Product Development to work for a leading Orange County cosmetic company.

Job Summary

Assistant Manager, Product Development is responsible for managing the product development process, from formula concept to pilot production for assigned skin care and personal care categories. This position will interact with cross-functional teams, including R&D Formulation and Tech Transfer Teams, Marketing, Regulatory, Quality, Packaging, Procurement, and Finance.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Manage product launch from PDR to pilot production
  • Recommend active ingredients based on marketing brief desired product attributes and claims
  • Confirm $/kg are in acceptable range to meet target formula costs
  • Confirm that formula INCI is ingredient policy compliant
  • Create compelling, innovative ingredient platform
  • Create Product Development Request (PDR), which includes desired claims, recommended ingredients, benchmark and target formula specifications, packaging specifications, testing and documentation requirements
  • Brief formulators and tech transfer teams on new formulas and aesthetic expectations
  • Evaluate submissions and provide redirects as needed
  • Troubleshoot formulas for potential stability issues
  • Approve pilot and production batches (1st, 2nd and 3rd)
  • Collaborate with Regulatory to ensure formula ingredient policy compliance
  • Initiate safety testing and if required, efficacy testing for claim substantiation
  • Develop information for product training and communications
  • Meet critical timelines and budget formula cost objectives
  • Evaluate current formulas for IP compliance, potential irritants, efficacy improvements
  • Confirm with external experts for potential irritants
  • Proactively recommend and formula improvement process
  • Product Life Cycle Management
  • Evaluate existing product lines for potential line extensions and upgrades
  • Present recommendations to management team
  • Manage formula safety testing to ensure all requirements are met
  • Initiate formula safety testing as specified on PDR
  • Create formula tracker for formulas developed by outside labs
  • Participate in weekly PD/R&D/Regulatory meetings for skin care formula updates
  • Coordinate safety testing results with Document Control Specialist
  • Track safety testing budget to meet budget objectives
  • Manage clinical efficacy lab testing 
  • Confirm schedule, safety testing needs, formula samples required, protocols reviewed and approved by Senior Manager, Regulatory, and Marketing
  • Obtain competitive quotes as needed
  • Track safety testing budget to meet budget objectives
  • Manage internal panel for formula evaluations
  • Create survey feedback forms
  • Recommend participants based on formula profile
  • Distribute, collect, and tabulate survey forms
  • Create formula redirect recommendation based on feedback
  • Participate in supplier meetings to learn about new technology and ingredients, bring recommendations in-house and elevate key product benefits

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry or biology; MBA a plus
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of global product development/formulation experience in skin care/personal care
  • Product launch experience
  • Marketing/Sales experience a plus
  • Familiarity with new product trends and innovation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficient in MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
