San Diego

San Diego is the most active biotech market in the state by number of companies, particularly at the clinical and commercial stage. Salaries are highly competitive and have risen sharply over the last several years. Most roles run close to the statewide averages listed above, with strong equity packages at earlier-stage companies offsetting any modest base salary differences versus the Bay Area.

Los Angeles / Orange County

LA and OC have seen significant biotech and medtech growth in recent years. Salaries generally run 5–10% below Bay Area levels for equivalent roles, though this gap has been narrowing. The lower cost of living relative to the Bay Area makes total quality of life compensation highly competitive.

What This Means If You’re Job Searching

If you’ve received an offer, benchmark it against the ranges above, but don’t stop there. Consider company stage, equity, and bonus structure before deciding whether the base salary is fair. A $120,000 base at a well-funded Series C startup with meaningful equity is a very different offer than $120,000 at a large commercial company with no equity upside.
